I start at about 10 weeks of age. I start by doing short runaways while my helper is holding him. Since the majority of my tracks for perps are (off) the lead, I do not begin (on) lead discipline until he is locating me continuously.

I had a litter of Mali puppies 2 1/2 yrs ago. When they were approx 4 weeks old they all did a little search square in the morning, for their breakfast. I know some think search squares are a little old fashioned but it didn't seem to cause any problems and it was fascinating to watch them quickly learn to stay in the scented area.

Tracking. At first the tracks are hot! I have the pup wait 2 minutes before being released. he runs out a short way and almost immediately goes to using his nose to locate me. I also incorporate a 45% angle turn in the very first tracks and have had little to no problems with the pup negotiating it.
Being as my Police K-9 s never are true trackers, I want him using all his skills to locate me.
Once he is doing 10 minute old tracks, I then begin (on) line work.
